Wir nutzen Speläotheme als Archive, um das Klima der Vergangenheit zu rekonstruieren. Speläotheme sind sekundäre Mineralablagerungen in Höhlen. Die häufigsten Formen sind Tropfsteine, wie Stalagmiten, Stalaktiten und Flowstones. Speläotheme bieten zahlreiche Vorteile als Klimaarchiv:

  • Sie kommen in fast allen Gebieten der Erde vor.
  • Sie können mit der 230Th/U-Datierungsmethode im Altersbereich von bis zu ca. 650.000 Jahren mit unvergleichbarer Präzision absolut datiert werden.
  • Verschiedene Indikatoren für das Klima der Vergangenheit, sogenannte Klimaproxys, wie stabile Sauerstoff- und Kohlenstoffisotope und Spurenelementkonzentrationen, können mit sehr hoher Auflösung bis zu subannuell gemessen werden.
  • Sie liefern kontinuierliche und lange zurückreichende Zeitreihen.

In unserem Labor verwenden wir modernste massenspektrometrische Methoden (MC-ICP-MS, LA-ICP-MS), die die höchstmögliche Genauigkeit bei der Altersbestimmung sowie eine sehr hohe räumliche und zeitliche Auflösung bei der Messung von Klimaproxys erlauben.

Die in Speläothemen gespeicherten Klimasignale werden von unterschiedlichsten Faktoren beeinflusst. Um die Signale hinsichtlich der Klimaschwankungen der Vergangenheit zu interpretieren, ist ein grundlegendes Verständnis der Prozesse, die diese Signale beeinflussen, nötig. Daher beschäftigt sich die Arbeitsgruppe auch mit der Erforschung und Modellierung von Isotopenfraktionierungsprozessen. Hierzu werden Experimente sowohl in Höhlen als auch unter kontrollierten Bedingungen im Labor durchgeführt.

  • Eine hochaufgelöste quantitative Rekonstruktion der Jahresmitteltemperatur für Zentraleuropa für die letzten 13.300 Jahre unter Verwendung jährlich laminierter Speläotheme aus Süddeutschland (PI: Dana Riechelmann, Co-PI: Denis Scholz)

In unserem Reinraumlabor führen wir die Probenaufbereitung für die massenspektrometrische Analyse durch. Mittels Ionentauscher-Säulen-Chromatographie werden die zu untersuchenden Elemente von der Probenmatrix (Karbonat, Gips, Phosphate, wässrige Lösungen) abgetrennt.

Die LA-ICP-MS („Laser Ablation – Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry“) ist eine empfindliche Analysenmethode zur schnellen Multi-Elementbestimmung im Spuren- und Ultraspurenbereich an festen Probenmaterialien und technischen Produkten. Das zu untersuchende Probenmaterial wird mittels einer fokussierten Laserstrahlung abladiert und mit einem Trägergas (Argon oder Helium) in die induktiv gekoppelte Plasmaionenquelle des ICP-MS transportiert. Im ca. 8000 °C heißen Plasma werden die winzigen Probenteilchen atomisiert und positiv ionisiert, beschleunigt und in das Hochvakuum des Massenspektrometers transportiert. Dort werden sie nach ihrem Masse-/Ladungsverhältnis und Energie-/Ladungsverhältnis getrennt und zeitaufgelöst detektiert. Die entstehenden Laserkrater sind nur wenige µm groß, daher lässt sich diese wenig invasive Methode gut auch für wertvolles Material (Museumsstücke, Edelsteine) einsetzen. Im Labor der Geowissenschaften der Universität Mainz findet die LA-ICP-MS seit 2004 Anwendung in der Spurenelementanalytik zur Charakterisierung von Proben aus den Bereichen Geologie, Mineralogie, Klimaforschung, Materialwissenschaften, Edelsteinforschung, Archäologie, und der Isotopenanalytik z.B. zur U-Pb-Datierung von Zirkonen.

Die MC-ICP-MS („Multi Collector – Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry“) ist eine sehr empfindliche Analysenmethode zur präzisen Bestimmung von Isotopenverhältnissen im Spuren- und Ultraspurenbereich an festen und flüssigen Probenmaterialien. Das zu untersuchende Probenmaterial wird entweder direkt mittels Laser-Ablation oder nach vorheriger nasschemischer Aufbereitung im Reinraumlabor mit einem Trägergas in die induktiv gekoppelte Plasmaionenquelle des ICP-MS transportiert. Im ca. 8000 °C heißen Plasma werden die winzigen Probenteilchen atomisiert und positiv ionisiert, beschleunigt und in das Hochvakuum des Massenspektrometers transportiert. Dort werden sie nach ihrem Energie-/Ladungsverhältnis und Masse-/Ladungsverhältnis getrennt und zeitaufgelöst in mehreren unterschiedlich empfindlichen Detektoren simultan nachgewiesen.

In unserem Labor messen wir seit 2019 verschiedene Isotopensysteme an unterschiedlichen geowissenschaftlichen Probenmaterialien. Ein Schwerpunkt ist die hochpräzise Datierung von Karbonaten im Zeitraum der letzten 650.000 Jahren mit der 230Th/U-Methode, auch in-situ mittels Laser-Ablation. Weiterhin konzentrieren wir uns auf folgende Isotopensysteme: Strontium, Calcium, Magnesium und Lithium.

Unsere Gruppe führt mit einem weltweit einzigartigen Aufbau Laborexperimente zum Wachstum von Speläothemen und der einhergehenden Isotopenfraktionierung durch. In einer Klimabox können Temperatur, Luftfeuchtigkeit, pCO2, die Isotopenzusammensetzung des atmosphärischen CO2 und des Tropfwassers eingestellt und kontrolliert werden. Wie in einer natürlichen Höhle können synthetische Speläotheme aus tropfenden oder fließenden sehr dünnen Lösungsfilmen ausgefällt werden. Hierdurch können wir den Einfluss verschiedener Umweltparameter wie Temperatur und Tropfrate auf die Isotopenzusammensetzung der Speläotheme unter kontrollierten Bedingungen untersuchen.
